Quarry Restoration

Meet at the Ripon Panthers Clubhouse at 10.00am or at the Quarry. This activity is expected to last 2 hours.

Our work to improve the Old Quarry habitat began in the Autumn and will continue throughout January (weather permitting). The dense canopied hawthorn shrub which has encroached on the quarry floor is being cleared to create a more open space . We hope this will, in time, enable scarce wetland native plants such as adder’s tongue fern and horsetail fern to re-establish themselves in this area.

All the material from the cut down shrubs will be used to build dead hedges around the perimeter of the quarry area and log piles to provide habitats and shelter for small mammals and insects.

Please be aware that this activity is quite physically demanding as it involves cutting down small trees and shrubs using handsaws and loppers. Cut down material then needs moving to create dead hedges in the required locations.
