Restoration of Quarry Habitat

Meet: Ripon Panthers Clubhouse
Time: 10.00am
Expected Duration: 2 hours

Improving the habitat of the old quarry area has been identified as a key activity. Work will take place this Autumn to coppice and clear the dense canopied hawthorn in the old quarry floor (square K6). The objective is to restore the habitat to a scarce open winter pond/summer pondside habitat with annual plants together with the recovery of ‘lost’ plants such as adder’s tongue fern.

The work will be quite physical, involving cutting back small trees and shrubs with loppers and saws, then dragging cut down vegetation to the edges of the quarry to form dead hedges. Please wear suitable clothing, especially footwear as the quarry floor will be wet and muddy. Thick gardening gloves are recommended. Please also bring along any refreshments you need during the activity.
