Quarry Restoration

06.11.2024 | Latest News

Improving the habitat of the old quarry area has been identified as a key activity and long term project. Work has begun to coppice and clear the dense canopied hawthorn shrub which has encroached on the quarry floor. There are four scheduled activity days this Autumn, but work to restore the area to scarce wetland habitat will take several years. Ultimately it is hoped that clearing the canopy will enable scarce wetland native plants such as adder’s tongue fern and horsetail fern to re-establish themselves in this area.

All the material from the cut down shrubs will be used to build dead hedges around the perimeter of the quarry area and log piles to provide habitats and shelter for small mammals and insects.

Please see the Events page for the scheduled activities and come along to help carry out this valuable work – tools provided. Whilst work of cutting down and moving some of the larger hawthorn shrubs is quite physical, there are lots of small shrubs and branches that need cutting up which is less demanding.
