Quarry Restoration – Progress Update
03.02.2025 | Latest News
Work began in the Autumn to clear dense canopied hawthorn and to coppice overgrown willow in the old Quarry section of Hell Wath. Thanks to the efforts of both FOHW and SVP volunteers over a number of sessions a significant area has now been cleared and a dead hedge has been constructed around much of the perimeter.
At the beginning of the project the floor of the Quarry was covered in dense undergrowth with little light penetrating to the Quarry floor.
Now the area has been cleared, space and light should provide the right conditions for ground vegetation to flourish. We hope to see scarce wetland species such as adder’s tongue fern and horsetail fern re-establish themselves in this habitat.
